About the Designer
La-Rae Subay, a "Georgia Peach" from Athens, GA, is the founder / designer of Black Ankh Designs LLC. Self taught in this industry, she has a Masters degree in Education, a B.A. in Psychology, and is currently seeking her Masters in Business Administration to ensure the powerful and consistent impact and growth of Black Ankh.
La-Rae’s trend-setting creativity is inspired by African culture. She is deeply moved by the spiritual energy of the continent and the breathtaking fabric creations produced. Sewing to musical favorites in the 4-6 am hours result in powerful, artistic, and wearable motifs. “My designs are embraced by individuals who are open to diversity, and open to wearing fun, radiant garments created/blended with authentic African fabrics.” Ms. Subay’s signature is not only her display of creative innovation and colorful blends, but also her skill in working with mud cloth.
The Meaning of Black Ankh
Black, La-Rae's favorite color, represents the unstoppable power of the Universe. The Egyptian Ankh, La-Rae's favorite symbol, represents eternal life and the balance of masculine and feminine energies (like the Yin and Yang). Together they define Black Ankh to mean "Universal Life" with an emphasis on each person's Unique-versal Life.
Accomplishments
La-Rae designed and constructed a Panel prototype for FloppySeat, the creator and manufacturer of the innovative shopping cart covers for infants/toddlers.
